issue two: emily van duyne and w.f. roby up the ante

Now that we are wrapping up issue one by moving from the process section to the curated section of the issue, we want to announce the editors for issue two. We are thrilled to have Emily Van Duyne and W.F. Roby curating that issue, whose theme is Ante/Anti. We are not sure exactly what that means, but it should all become clearer Dec. 1, which is when they will begin the process section of their issue.

Emily Van Duyne is a poet who lives just south of Atlantic City, N.J., where she is adjunct professor of writing at Atlantic Cape Community College. Her poems can be viewed at I Was Born Doing Reference Work in Sin. She looks forward to her inevitable besting of W.F. Roby in this argument in verse.

W.F. Roby lives in Dallas, Texas, and works as a freelance writer. His poems have appeared at Umbrella, Stirring, The GW Review, and others. His new one act play ForwardS just received its premiere at The Clusterfucks one act play festival in Lubbock, Texas. Other plays have been produced at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Ocala Civic Theater, Texas Tech University and in a kiddie pool out back of a Starbucks. When asked for a quote for this piece, he said, “I wish I could offer you a helping hand, really I do.”

Some may recognize Van Duyne and Roby’s names because they were contestants in Project Verse, the brainchild of poet Dustin Brookshire, “the Iditarod of the poetry world,” according to Van Duyne. Roby was a finalist, and Van Duyne was the winner. We loved their work when they presented it individually, and we saw a writing connection developing between the two as well as the contest played out. For these reasons, we feel they are a perfect curatorial duo for issue two of Mutating the Signature, especially since writing “for, with and to each other” is central to the journal’s vision, as is forming or strengthening a creative relationship and creative partnership.

We have seen what these writers can do working apart. Now let’s see what happens when they work in concert on their own issue of Mutating the Signature.

About Mutating the Signature

Mutating the Signature is a space where issues are produced by two curators working together to write for, with and to each other over the course of the issue.

Two poets — or one poet and one artist of any type — can use the issue they are curating to strengthen or form a creative relationship and creative partnership. At the same time, both can develop their own work and collaborate with each other in whatever ways they might want to collaborate.
