untelling stories curated issue now available

We (finally) finished curating Untelling Stories, the first “test flight” issue of Mutating the Signature. The curated issue is now laid out and available in an electronic format.

Our test flight was designed so that we, as publishers of Mutating the Signature, could have the opportunity to act in the curatorial role before inviting guest curators to work on future issues. This means we now have practical, not just theoretical, experience regarding how the entire process works. We also hoped to model some of the ways in which future curators might work together on their own issues.

We feel good about what we accomplished during this issue, both in terms of processing and curating the material.

The final piece can be viewed or downloaded at issuu.com or as a PDF file. The issuu version is embedded above. (If you are reading this post on an RSS reader, you will have to click through to the site to see the embedded document.) Or, if you prefer, you can view or download our PDF version of the collection.

This curated issue represents the final version of the work we drafted here on the site from Oct. 7 to Nov. 18, 2009. Revising the work collaboratively, determining the order of the pieces and laying them out in an attractive manner were much more time-consuming than we had anticipated. But the entire process was also nothing short of a blast. We would not trade the experience for anything, not even the ugliest luggage in the airport or an entire suitcase museum.

We hoped to have audio files for some of our pieces available by now, but with Dana’s viral or bacterial infection turned lung infection turned sinus infection turned bronchitis, the audio files have been delayed. We’ll get to them as soon as she is feeling better.

For those who have not seen the process section of Untelling Stories, where all the rough drafts and process notes reside, you can check those posts out by clicking here.

Donna, we have the next couple of issue curators lined up, but after that we’ll be doing a call for curators — kind of like a call for submissions, only we won’t be asking for work, per se, but for poets and artists to submit themselves, if that makes any sense.

We’ll make sure you see that call when we pull it together.

Thank you Andre, and thanks for helping me pull the final PDF together, as well as for all your encouragement as we were working on the process section.

I already see a couple of changes I want to make to the file. I might talk to you tomorrow about how to best go about making them. I think I just need to delete the current file and then upload a new one with the same name so the link won’t change.

It’s a huge bummer — I thought I caught everything, but when I read it out loud, I noticed a few things that I want to change in a couple of the pieces I authored.

One of the most exciting uses of new media I’ve yet seen, The concept and writing are brilliant. I was reading this in the middle of the night because I couldn’t sleep. Now I’m too buzzed to sleep anyway; you two make me feel both old and young.

Beth, that’s amazing feedback. I am honored and flattered. I bet Nathan is, too, but I can’t speak for him.

About Mutating the Signature

Mutating the Signature is a space where issues are produced by two curators working together to write for, with and to each other over the course of the issue.

Two poets — or one poet and one artist of any type — can use the issue they are curating to strengthen or form a creative relationship and creative partnership. At the same time, both can develop their own work and collaborate with each other in whatever ways they might want to collaborate.
